Preston Scott.
Self-centered asshole.
Self-absorbed prick.
The king of supposed one-night stands, and my brother’s best friend.
I hate him.
I loathe him.
I despise him.
I love him.
He’s the man of my dreams and everything I know I should stay away from, but, oh, he’s so irresistible.
The things he does to me, I can’t keep my mind off of him.
But God, I need to keep my distance, yet I’m so drawn to him.
And then in an instant when my world is forever changed, Preston is the only one who I can turn to for comfort. He takes care of me, my mind, my soul, my heart, and my body.
But I know this can never last.
It’s not in him to settle down, and he surely won’t with his best friend’s sister.

Contemporary Romance, Brother’s Best Friend

First Person, Dual-POV

This book is part of the Cocky Hero Club: original works from various authors inspired by Keeland and Ward’s New York Times bestselling Cocky Bastard series. This is a standalone story inspired by Cocky Bastard.

As a follower of Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward’s work, I’ve truly enjoyed the idea of this collection.

This was a good add on to the ongoing series.

This was a slow burn love, that took a bit too long to happen. The male character was very frustrating. At the same time, this was a huge tear jerker, so get ready a bit of angst.

Slow burn romance!

24.5/35 STARS –  3.5 STARS (between 24.5 stars and 27.5 stars)

Addictiveness: 4 Character: 3 Cover: 3.5 Freshness: 3.5 Plot: 4 Romance: 3 Writing Style: 3.5

Action 1/5 Angst 4/5 Darkness 0/5 Humor 1/5 Romance 4/5 Suspense/Mystery 2/5

Would I recommend? I think so.

Would I re-read this book/series? I don’t think so.

Would I read more from the author? Yes, she was a new-to-me author and I will look at her other books.

Addictiveness: 4/5 Even though the slow burn sometimes felt like too slow, I got invested at Harleigh’s drama. I really felt for her and cried buckets with her. As addictive as pizza!!!

Character: hero 2.5/5, heroine 4.5/5, secondary characters 4/5, growth 4/5, real 4/5 Lovable heroine and frustrating hero. Even though slow, the characters presented a good personal growth by the end of the book.

Harleigh was a great heroine!!!! I really liked her, she was easy to love connect and understand. That girl went through a lot and she persevere beautifully. She also had the patience of an angel to wait for Preston to get over all his hang ups that felt like a whole bunch of nothing sometimes. Harleigh was the star of this show, and she truly shined.

Secondary characters I really felt for some of them, but I can’t mention much so I don’t spoil the story.

Villain/antagonists… real life road blocks were the biggest problems here. A lot of angst and soul searching needed from the main characters. Preston personality was also a major antagonist for the story.

Some characters were easy to love, connect and understand.

Freshness: 3.5/5 This was a brother’s best friend romance with all the usual clichés of the hero not wanting to break bro code. At the same time there were a few twists that gave this a fresh vibe. As fresh as ice tea during summer!!!

Plot: believable 4/5, conflict 2.5/5, dialogue 3/5, ending 4/5, enjoyment 3.5/5, opening 5/5, pace 2.5/5, setting 4/5, subplots 4/5, twists 4/5  Great opening and exciting ending. Good plot, with ok dialogues and frustrating pace. Good setting, with interesting subplots. High level of enjoyment!

I really like a brother’s best friend romance and Harleigh story arch was interesting and every turn and twist the plot sent her way it was well dealt by her.

Writing Style: 3.5/5 Great heroine, with interesting plot and good twists. Cohesive and clean writing style. Promising writing!!!

Cover: art 3.5/5, title 5/5, color-font 5/5, buy 4/5  I’m obsessed with book covers. I love to find snippets of the stories within the art. This one was ok. Too generic for me. What really attracted me was the title and the fact that was part of the Cocky Hero Club. I missed a subtitle or something that gave me more of a glimpse of this particular story. I would probably buy this book by its cover, but I had to read the blurb.

Character: 2.5/5

Preston was a very frustrating hero. I was unable to connect at all with him. His attitude was not ok. This is not really about him being a jerk, because I read a lot of dark romance and bully romance and I have loved many antiheroes before. There was just something at his personality that didn’t work for me.

Romance: believable 4/5, chemistry 3/5, description 3/5, development 2.5/5, steam 3/5  I like a slow burn story, but this one was a bit too slow for me. Preston was always baffling me with his back and forth and I had a hard time wanting him for Harleigh. Slow burn love story!

You MAY read this because you follow the author; you SHOULD read this because you like the series; you MUST read this because the heroine is a very lovable character!!!
