Arianne Capizola is living a lie.
Angry. Abandoned. Afraid.
She’d rather spend her days locked away on her father’s estate than with the guy who stole her innocence: her fiancé.

Niccolò Marchetti is living a nightmare.
Broken. Banished. Betrayed.
He’d do anything to save the girl he loves, even if it means paying the ultimate price.

As the truth surround their legacies begins to unravel, everything they thought they knew shatters. But Nicco will do anything to protect the girl who taught him how to love, and she will risk it all to save the guy who stole her heart.

The clock is ticking as old and new enemies close in.

Only this time, their love might not be enough to save them.

*King of Souls is the second book in Nicco and Ari’s duet. Due to mature content that some readers may find distressing, this book is recommended for readers 18+

Series Rating: five-stars
Also in this series: Prince of Hearts

New Adult Romantic Suspense, Mafia

First Person, Dual-POV (with a couple chapters in the end with a different voice)

This is book #2 of the Verona Legacy series and book #2 of Nico and Ari’s duet. This shouldn’t be read as a standalone.

WARNING: That are situations that can be a trigger for some people!

Yes!!!! She did it! What an ending for the duet! I loved this!!!!

This was a contemporary Romeo and Juliet story within the mafia trope.

I loved how the main characters are still teenagers/new adults really. Most mafia books out there are about the big boss and not the next generation.

The author was able to answer all my questions, giving this duet a perfect, cohesive ending.

Here on the second installment we had less college moments and a lot more suspense. In fact, from the first page, we were kept guessing and hoping for the best.

Ms. Cotton was very tricky and even though she has ended this duet with the perfect bow, tying everything really well… she has also given us a small taste of what is coming next. Yes, Enzo story is coming and it is going to be fire!!! Can’t wait, in fact, I almost cried when I saw that I have to wait until January for it.

Family saga romance!!!

33/35 STARS –  4.5 STARS (between 31.5 stars and 33 stars)

Addictiveness: 5 Character: 4.5 Cover: 4 Freshness: 4.5 Plot: 5 Romance: 5 Writing Style: 5

Action 4/5 Angst 4/5 Darkness 2/5 Humor 0/5 Romance 5/5 Suspense/Mystery 5/5

Would I recommend? Yes, for anyone that likes mafia romance!!!

Would I re-read this book/series? Yes!

Would I read more from the author? I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

Addictiveness: 5/5 This book was fast-paced and filled with suspense. It kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning. As addictive as chocolate!!!

Character: hero 5/5, heroine 4/5, secondary characters 5/5, growth 5/5, real 5/5 Multidimensional characters with several layers that were exposed slowly by the author with the progression of the story. Their personal evolution was felt in this second book.

Arianne annoyed me a bit more in this second book. Just a bit, but being fair to Nicco, that is almost perfect, I had to take a little bit from her. I also have to be fair to Arianne, that once again, when the time came, she become a kickers heroine and did the Capizola’s proud.

Nicco was again the personification of book boyfriend. Nicco is a mob son/capo, but he has heart and we can see the struggle with the life style. He knows that is no way out of it, he is also very loyal to his family, but he is not lost. He has moral struggles which make him more human.

Secondary characters They were all so complex and amazing. OMG, I can’t wait to read Enzo’s book. It is going to be so amazing. Nora is the best friend everybody should have. In fact, I could make a long list here of secondary characters that deserve their own book. (Don’t forget Luis Ms. Cotton!)

Villain/antagonists … I started this book knowing the names of all the villains and antagonists… or I thought so. But Ms. Cotton, haven’t I mentioned that she can be tricky, she threw us into a loop and gave us a completely new villain. Yeah, well done!

Even though they were all complex, they were also easy to love, connect and understand!!!

Cover: art 4/5, title 5/5, color-font 5/5, subtitle 5/5, background 3/5 buy 4/5  I’m obsessed with book covers. I love to find snippets of the stories within the art. I always try to be true to myself, I buy so many books because of the cover and I have skipped many because of not very appealing art. Covers are part of the experience for me and I do like to understand them. This one was still a bit too generic for me. I can maybe see Nicco in the picture, but I miss more personal touches. The title and subtitles were great and really added to the story. I would maybe buy this book by its cover, but I would need to read the blurb first.

Freshness: 4.5/5 One-of-a-kind! This felt original. The new look of a mafia family from the younger generation added with a few unexpected twists made this book UNIQUE. As fresh as mint tea when you are dealing with a bad cold!

Plot: believable 5/5, conflict 5/5, dialogue 5/5, ending 5/5, enjoyment 5/5, opening 5/5, pace 5/5, setting 5/5, subplots 5/5, twists 5/5  Great opening with great ending and a dash of spice, presenting the beginning of the next duet. Believable plot, with good dialogues and great pace. Fun setting, interesting subplots with amazing twists. Highest level of enjoyment!

Can I just say that I wasn’t expecting the plot twists. Wow! I was shocked for a moment.

I love a mafia romance. The young vibe of this series made this duet wonderful and refreshing.

Ms. Cotton gave me plausible answers to all my doubts. She also made this a thrilling romance, filled with suspense and a very unexpected twist. Wow!

Romance: believable 5/5, chemistry 5/5, description 5/5, development 3.5/5, steam 4/5  These kids were more certain of each other and more relaxed to explore their love. It was beautiful and really hot! Eternal love!!!

Writing Style: 5/5 I love Ms. Cotton’s writing. Multidimensional characters within a great plot. Steamy romance permeated with the cuteness of youth. Fast-paced story in a clean, cohesive writing. Writing of a wordsmith!

Because I try to be very analytical and I don’t really believe in perfection…

The psychologist in me, still finds a bit unrealistic how Arianne dealt with all her troubles. Too fast, not enough difficulties from her part. It doesn’t really fit a person that young that has been sheltered her entire life.

You MAY read this because you follow the author; you SHOULD read this because you enjoy mafia romance; you MUST read this because this story gave a fresh vibe to an usual mafia cliché!!!

Nicco!” Arianne clambered off the bed and rushed to my side.
“Wait.” I held up my other hand to stop her. A dark angry storm was raging through me. I wanted to hit something, to hurt and bleed.
I needed it.
Dark rivulets of blood seeped over my hand, but I barely felt it. I was too wired. Too hungry for the kill.
“Let me take a look at it.” Arianne stepped forward and I jerked back, like a caged animal being riled.
“Nicco, it’s me. It’s only me.” She had me cornered with no way out. My body trembled violently as I desperately tried to hold on to my frayed rope of control.
“Nicco…” Arianne brushed the hair from my face. My head hung low, my shoulders hunched and tight. I wanted to kill him. I wanted to hunt him down and kill him with my bare hands.
“Come back to me.” She gently lifted my busted hand and inspected the damage. “It needs cleaning. Let me see what there is.” Arianne left me and went into the bathroom. When she came back, she had a small first aid kit. “I found it in the cabinet. Sit.” Her gaze went to the bed, but I remained rigid.
“I need to stand.”
“Okay. Hold still.” She worked in silence, cleaning me up and bandaging my hand. My pulse began to slow, the tightness in my chest easing.
It was her.
Her touch, her calmness.
“I’m sorry,” I choked out.
Arianne took my face in her hands and looked right at me. God, I wanted to drown in the dark pools of honey. “Talk to me.”
“I want to kill him… I should have killed him.”
“So why didn’t you?”
It was the last thing I expected her to say, but I knew this wasn’t about her, it was about me.
“It’s not that simple,” I released a heavy sigh. “If I’d have killed him… it would start something we might not be able to finish. I can’t do that to the Family, to you.”
She nodded, dropping one of her hands to mine and lacing them together. “I hate Scott for what he did to me. I hate him so much that sometimes I wish you had done it.” Arianne took a shuddering breath. “But I want a life with you. I want a future. I can’t have that if you’re behind bars… or worse.”
“If he hurts you again, I can’t promise I won’t do it.”
Something flashed in her eyes, but before I could decipher it, Arianne kissed me. “I don’t want to talk any more, Nicco. I want you to love me. I want you to make me forget about the monsters.”
